Khudo Mela : Promotion of Local Khudo (Molasses) || Krishi Vines

3rd Magh, 2081

In order to promote their local product, Khudo (sugarcane syrup), and to restore the tradition of Khudo production in Malepatan and Dhodbeshi, the residents of Pokhara-32 Malepatan arranged a Khudo Mela on 14 Poush, 2081 in collaboration with the Agricultural Development Bank.

The demand for Malepatan Dhobhesi’s Khudo rises in Pokhara and the neighboring districts, regardless of the occasion—the 15th of Poush or Maghae Sakarati, or rituals like marriage or bratabandha. The custom of holding tins while reciting “Lau hai Malepatan Dhodbeshi ko Khudo ayo” has evolved into a distinct culture in this area.

There were several food vendors selling sugarcane and its byproducts, such as Khudo and jaggery. On the occasion of the fair, there was ‘tato khudo khane pratiyogita’ and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners of the competition were given 4, 3 and 2 liters of Khudo respectively. In the same way, the top stall and the farmers who produced the most sugarcane received awards for first, second, third, and fourth place, respectively, worth 10,000, 7,000, 5,000, and 3,000.

Dhanraj Acharya, the mayor of Pokhara Metropolitian Municipality, stated that the  municipality is promoting farmers through a number of initiatives. He emphasized that the city aims to achieve self-sufficiency by generating jobs through local production and that a strong emphasis has been placed on production based subsidies.
