New Initiative Aims for Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Northern Nigeria || Krishi Vines

Rotterdam, the Netherlands – On September 21, 2024, the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) announced a partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to enhance climate-smart agriculture in Northern Nigeria. This initiative aims to improve food security for over 30,000 households in a region heavily impacted by climate change, conflict, and poverty.

The project, part of IFAD’s Value Chain Programme, will introduce sustainable farming practices and advanced technologies. Key goals include training over 54,000 farmers, cultivating 218,000 hectares using climate-resilient methods, and improving access to digital financial services.

Professor Patrick V. Verkooijen, CEO of GCA, highlighted the initiative’s importance in building resilience against climate risks while addressing immediate food security challenges. This collaboration is part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program, aimed at scaling climate adaptation across the continent.

  1. I commend the partnership between GCA and IFAD in enhancing climate-smart agriculture for Northern Nigeria. As a long-time agricultural extension agent in Sokoto State, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges our farmers face due to climate change and limited resources. This initiative’s focus on sustainable practices and technology is vital for building resilience and improving food security.

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with your team to tailor these efforts specifically for Sokoto State. Together, we can empower our farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in a changing climate and secure a better future for their communities.
