“The Missing Focus on Agriculture at Home” – By Upendra Bhusal

In recent years, Nepal’s agriculture has faced many problems. Farmers are struggling with low productivity, outdated techniques, climate change impacts, and lack of proper support from the government. Despite these issues, our leaders, including the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister, often focus on attending international conferences and foreign programs. While speaking on global stages may seem important, it doesn’t help solve the real issues facing our farmers here at home.

The biggest problem is that our leaders talk about Nepal’s agriculture on international platforms, but very little is done on the ground. They make big promises to the world, but when it comes to supporting our farmers with better resources, new technologies, and strong policies, not much progress is made. Farmers need access to better seeds, modern equipment, proper irrigation, and market opportunities, but these issues continue to be ignored.

To truly improve agriculture in Nepal, our leaders need to focus more on the problems here. This means investing in rural areas, building infrastructure like roads and storage facilities, and creating policies that actually help farmers. Supporting local research, promoting sustainable farming practices, and providing training to farmers are key steps.

If the government puts more effort into solving the problems that our farmers face every day, we can boost agricultural production and improve the livelihoods of millions of people. Instead of just attending international meetings, our leaders should prioritize actions that make a difference at home. This is the only way to ensure that Nepal’s agriculture can grow and succeed in the future.
